And All My Dreams, Torn Asunder
This is basically my Valedictory Candidacy speech from way back in May '99. I wanted to put this up just after I made the speech and lost to Graham Little, but I kept putting it off. This may not be as entertaining as my other 'essays', but I put it on here just now because I needed to get something done.
Hi. My name is Will Matheson.
You know, we stand in front of the doorstep of the threshold of the entryway
to the new millenium. We are the second last graduating class of this millenium,
and by golly we are obligated to rub it in!
I'm running for Valedictorian
for several reasons: Firstly, I have a unique perspective of this school
and its students. Secondly, I couldn't resist the chance to make a speech
again.
Seriously though, if elected,
I will be a positive element of one of the most memorable gatherings of
our high school 'career'. The choices you make tomorrow will affect the
rest of your lives.
And well, much as we hate
to think about it... high school is almost over. Twelve or thirteen odd
years of pain and here we are. We need to look back and reflect, and look
forward and plan.
It's just so overwhelming.
It happened so fast. Half a score and two years ago we were yay tall and
we were probably thinking "twelve years! I'll be old then...". Even
now, the race for Valedictorian is the talk of the old folks home.
And we've all grown really
attached to this place. I mean, think of all the things we'll miss about
CPA... our friends, our teachers, the smell of manure reaching your nostrils
as you leave the Lobby... I'll bet the memories will bring us to tears
if the compost doesn't.
Well, I just hope we all
had fun. Despite rumors to the contrary, the reason we go to school is
to have fun. In university or college, on the other hand, the theme is
learning. So let's enjoy what we have left to the fullest. Savor the moment.
If elected, I'll have a kickin' speech ready that will be somewhere to
the left of inspirational and a yard from funny. But probably better than
that, even. So let's go Cheetahs and thank you for your time.
Oy, that was the shortest essay to ever go on this page... it gives "The Ideal Practical Joke" a run for its money. =) Remember, the Film and Video script collection will be on its way soon!
