There's a new box at the bottom of this page. Later it will be given a permanent home, but right now I just want it out of the way. Oh yes, there's also this really lame quiz about me you can take here - it's kind of an e-mail gimmick, but you can take it too. If there are any problems with it, please e-mail me right away.

News: I will be in the Toronto area from March 12th through to the 21st, more especially from the 15th or 16th onward. If anyone wants to hook up for anything, that'd be great - I'm already getting together with at least one friend up there. Other friends, drop me a line.

I've also began to write bad poetry again. Whether or not my bad, non-rhyming, unmetered poetry will develop into good poetry remains to be seen. Now bear with me; I'm a little rusty as I haven't written verse of any sort since Grade Nine, and back then it was mostly plagiarized anyway.

PS: By the way, Angie Spierenburg, GIS technician and friend of "Sages of Time" star Greg Baker, will be on the flight over - so be sure to say 'hi' to her, too! She made me insert this comment when she was drunk, though I might have done it anyway. =)

Thought: I've had an amazing revelation today concerning Prince Edward Island, my province of birth. As you may know, a character of Lucy Maud Montgomery's named "Anne Shirley" (from the book "Anne of Green Gables" and its sequels) is idolized, vandalized and merchandised all over the small, agrarian, gossipy province. Now Anne is a pretty distinct character ("Anne with an 'e!'"), and she's also an outsider in her community - so following PEI tradition, she is a bit of an outcast. Lucy Maud was considered a bit of an oddball in her time as well.

Essentially, I have come to believe that the character of Anne and all the uniqueness she represents is a subtle yet biting commentary of society on PEI. Although Lucy Maud loved PEI, she, unlike most islanders, was able to see how mean and callous and cruel some islanders could be to outsiders (unless they have money or close relations on PEI), and she wrote this up in her book. Meanwhile, PEI today makes tens of millions of dollars of Anne crap every year, so the irony of it all is just sickening.

Bring this topic up with the "from away" husband or wife of a native islander, who bears the daily burden of being marked 'Come From Away' for life, even after being married fifty years. You will then, I assure you, see the real PEI.

But I'll still go and visit often, of course. I just wouldn't want to live there. I'm half Cape Bretoner, anyway.

Bad Poetry:

Snow

snow snow snow snow
more and more
more and more
snow snow snow snow

No! Enough already!
No more snow, I say!
I have to shovel this all, you know!
But God just looks down and laughs.
It falls as snow.

ha ha ha ha (snow snow snow snow)
more and more
more and more
snow snow snow snow

Aaaarrgggh!!
It's up to my second floor!
My kids are sledding out their windows!
How am I going to shovel this all?
But God just looks down and laughs.
It falls as pellets.

ha ha ha ha (ow ow ow ow)
more and more
more and more
ow ow ow ow

My grandmother just broke her hip!
And the ambulance won't come in! (Wusses!)
Help help help, send HELP!
But God just looks down and laughs.
It falls as snow again.

ha ha ha ha (snow snow snow snow)
more and more
more and more
snow snow snow snow

I can't find my house!
Where are my kids; where's my wife?
Where's my grandmother, she's probably dead!
But God just looks down and laughs uproariously.

ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha (snow snow snow snow
   snow snow snow snow)
more and more lots and lots
more and more lots and lots
snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snoAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Other: E-mail news: Due to a service change, messages sent to my old e-mail account (@altavista.net) may not be responded to for an extended period of time, though I may still receive them (see below for the reason). This message is intended only for those who have been e-mailing me before April 2001. Again, my primary e-mail is and always will be me@willmatheson.com

Old e-mail 'blackout' dates: August 8-21 and November 8-22, 2001.

* - This is because of a MAIL.COM service change. They can no longer provide for free the e-mail forwarding service that automatically directs my willmatheson@altavista.net messages into my Crosswinds POP account, so now I'll have to check for those messages on the web. I won't be doing that very often.
