Halifax

Welcome to the Halifax Regional Municipality. Vibrant, romantic and exciting, Halifax is a modern port city steeped in history, with a captivating international flair. Halifax delights visitors with its impressive array of museums, galleries, historic sites, fine restaurants, colourful gardens and exciting nightlife. Across the harbour, Dartmouth beckons with beautiful lakeside trails, historic Evergreen House - former home of the late Dr. Helen Creighton, Canada's first lady of folklore - and the lovely Shubenacadie Park. Explore charming seaside towns, sun-drenched beaches, sparkling coves and miles of rugged shoreline guarded by graceful lighthouses. Imagine the excitement of city living, the charms of small town life and the pristine beauty of nature - all in one place.

The Public Gardens

Rich in charm and history, downtown Halifax is compact and perfect for exploring on foot. Stroll the flower-lined paths of the oldest Victorian gardens in North America or watch military history come alive with the skirl of the bagpipes and the roar of the cannon at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. On sunny days, the city's sparkling waterfront is a treat for the senses. Here, broad walkways connect inviting plazas and green spaces with eclectic shops, lively outdoor cafés, pubs and fine restaurants. Experience our seafaring past at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, enjoy a fascinating harbour tour or wander the cobbled lanes of Historic Properties, where privateers once stashed their loot.

And when the sun sets, Halifax heats up. Our non-stop nightlife moves to the beat of fiery Celtic fiddles played in hundred-year-old pubs and cool jazz that brightens the night in friendly nightclubs.

The lighthouse at Peggy's Cove

Along our coast lies adventure. Enjoy sun and surf on the broad sandy beaches of Martinique or Clam Harbour. Travel winding coast roads to picturesque Eastern Passage and Peggy's Cove or paddle a sea kayak across pristine coves where seals and dolphins play. It's all waiting for you when you discover the Halifax Regional Municipality.

With our many millennium events, including Tall Ships 2000 and the 250th birthday celebration of Dartmouth, 2000 will be a perfect year to visit our Halifax Regional Municipality. Join us for these celebrations which promise to make history as one of the largest and most spectacular celebrations during the millennium year. Tall Ships 2000 will be the party of the millennium - a party worth waiting a hundred years for.
