PS16 - Juan I

My Juan collection is divided into two parts - this one, which covers our own property, and a second one which covers some freaky things I saw elsewhere in the city. The second part will be delayed until PS17 because I haven't turned the applicable rolls in for developing. =) However, if you're dying for some freaky Juan pics right now, I reccomend checking out the Juan thread of Photoeast.ca. Also, Councillor Goucher's Bedford pages have some good pictures.

Most of our Juan troubles were more about the loss of electricity (we were out about nine days) than property damage. For instance, this tree fell, but it didn't hit the house.

And neither did this one...

But this one sure did!

It made the view from the dining room a little greener, I must say. I was working in there when it hit. I heard this awful snap, then a bunch of CRASH CRASH CRASH sounds, then a big "Thud!" I was like, "woah, what happened?" And there it was, or what I could see of it from the window - a whole lot of green where emptiness used to be. It's a good thing the branches were aligned just so, or it would have broken a window.

Well, we had to summon help to deal with this. That's Ed (left) and Phillip (centre) on the end of the deck with their cousin Paul.

The view of same tree from my bedroom.

Mutual cousin David came over with a crane to help get the tree out of the way.

Mac climbed up to hook up the tree and take care of some stray branches.

Handy to have a cousin with a crane truck, I always say. From left to right: Ed, Brad (stepbrother), Eric (stepgrandfather).

From left to right: Mac, David, Phillip.

My mother, the incurable vicarious foreman (left) with Angela (stepsister, second from left).

Damage: A few bent shingles. Wow, did we get off easy.

Studying by candlelight:

T'would be like this for many days thereafter. Fortunately I could listen to Red Sox playoff games on a Boston radio station.

The lake shore, post-Juan.

Our wharf (if you can call it that), took practically no damage - many others in HRM were obliterated.

This power line connects to Frances and Gerry's cottage - it was down for weeks.
